Dear Club Members

Welcome to another exciting year of activities with the Mount Holyoke College Peninsula Club.  At our annual meeting in June a new Board was elected. I am pleased to welcome Barbara Monks and Joanne Hirutsuka Peterson as co-Vice-Presidents and Program Chairs. They’ve planned many exciting things for us in the coming months.  Jill Breckenridge returns as Treasurer and Marilyn Bauriedel is our Secretary.  We would like to expand the board and are seeking members interested in filling some critical roles for us such as Young Alum Chairperson and we are looking for assistance with both our website and newsletters.  Many thanks to Anne Raphael for continuing her membership efforts.  Please be sure to pay your dues for this year, our new calendar year started June 30th.  Please send your checks for $20 to Jill Breckenridge at  2505 Coronet Blvd, Belmont CA 94002.   (Members of the classes before 1955 or after 2000 pay only $10).  We look forward to seeing all of you at one or more of our events.  Our best wishes to Janet Chang, outgoing Co-President, we look forward to welcoming Janet’s new baby at an upcoming meeting.

Film Discussion: Monday, September 19,  7:30 - 9:30 P.M.

Please plan on attending the September event of the Mount Holyoke Club of the Peninsula on Monday evening, September 19th from 7:30 to 9:30 P.M. at Marilyn Bauriedel's home at 3673 South Court, Palo Alto.  Marilyn's "little sister" at Mount Holyoke Kiseko Minaguchi , who was then a grad student for one year and who is from Japan, will be here to present her research findings and  lead a discussion of how mothers have been presented on the screen in post-WWII Japanese films.  She is a professor of English and American literature and also a mother and grandmother.  She has studied American and Japanese films for years and last year was awarded a Ph.D. in Japan for her film studies work.  She has produced a book on the influence of American films on the maternal image presented in Japanese films.  In an e-mail to Marilyn Kiseko threw out this little teaser about the influence of American literature, as well: "The unlikely crossing over of Japanese weepies and the American poet, Sylvia Plath, would possibly astound you all."  Feel free to bring guests who are not MHC club members but who are interested in discussing films.  Please R.S.V.P. to Marilyn at 650 493-1364 or by e-mail at mbauriedel@ursu.com.
